This is Michel Hazanavicius’ first animated film
During the war, a poor woodcutter and his wife live in a large forest. One day, the woman finds and rescues a little girl, bringing irreversible changes to the lives of the couple and the people whose paths will cross.
This is the best 2024 release I’ve seen so far this year, and we are in mid-December 2024
It tells a story almost like a folk tale, set in Poland during World War II. Most of the plot takes place in the forest, which is so typical of the aforementioned tales, which revolve around a couple of lumberjacks who adopt a little Jewish girl who was thrown from a deportation train that passed through their forest.
Even from a technical point of view, everything is done to perfection
Her father threw her down to save her from certain death in Auschwitz. I won’t go into the details of the plot so you can see for yourself, I just want to add that the film will reach a deeply philosophical conclusion.
The images of the film are brilliantly crafted
The drawing style is perfect, not too detailed, not too rough, showing mainly low-light scenes with dominant gray tones, thus highlighting the horror of the most infamous war and mass destruction event in human history. And then the soundtrack, which is sublime: the soundtrack, the sound effects, the narration and the dubbing (I saw the original version in French), all of it is absolutely suitable to present this gem of a film.
In conclusion, it is one of the best films that addresses the theme of racism and in particular the artistic procedure of the Shoah and the story it wants to tell
